Suppalink website creates mega online Australian shopping mall
An Australian-developed website is revolutionising the way consumers are using the internet for their shopping needs by providing a virtual retail centre that currently hosts more than half a million businesses nationwide.
www.suppalink.com is the first website in the world to combine an extensive business directory with an integrated online marketplace that enables users to quickly purchase items in a secure environment from participating retailers.
More than 10 years in the making, and costing over $1 million in development costs, the site is rapidly gaining traction from Australia's largest retailers as well as thousands of smaller companies located around the country that now have the ability through www.suppalink.com to reach a national, and even global shopping audience.
Managing director Jamie O'Leary says Suppalink is "one of a kind. It's the only one in the world as no other website can achieve what we can achieve in terms of functionality".
The innovative website uses the latest technology to create a live, interactive directory of businesses throughout Australia. With more than 500,000 companies already listed, consumers can access up-to-date information of businesses in their local area.
The Suppalink website allows businesses to maintain their contact details, upload photos or coupons, select the suburbs relative to their location and provide direct links to their websites through a secure control room. This allows them to directly target a specific market.
The website also offers a marketplace where there are links to over 300 online shopping sites, creating a virtual shopping centre. Mr O'Leary says "consumers benefit from being able to shop for shoes, wine and groceries all in the one place."
Each business in the marketplace provides a shopping cart service to consumers, and the website is restricted to Australian companies. Mr O'Leary says this makes Suppalink "more trustworthy to consumers as they know where the product is coming from." Private sellers are also catered for and they can sell their items alongside major companies.
The concept for Suppalink stemmed from a desire to provide an online service to consumers that enables them to purchase products and find businesses in their local area. The latest technology has enabled Suppalink to use a filing system unlike any other website, with internet technicians taking six years to develop the program.
"We had to make something that was so simple for people to use, and hide all the technology that's in behind it," Mr O'Leary says.
"Suppalink aims to make online shopping an easier experience for consumers as it eliminates the need to search for each company. We've made something that is so simple for people to use and we have hidden all the technology behind it."
